General Information
The New Jersey Chapter of the American
College of Emergency Physicians is proud to present
this year's exciting program. The annual NJ-ACEP
Scientific Assembly has been designed and coordinated
by Dr. Victor Almeida, NJ-ACEP Education Committee Chairman.
The Scientific Assembly offers current information on
timely issues and current techniques to help emergency
physicians, residents and emergency health care providers
enhance their practice. The courses will be presented
by faculty selected for outstanding teaching ability
and expertise in their specified field within emergency
medicine.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program participants
should be able to:
Receive an overview of the issues on which National
ACEP is focusing --
Understand the need for effective physician lobbying
and examples of effective outcomes in legislation --
Become familiar with current bioterrorism strategies
in New Jersey -- learn the vertical and horizontal command
structure -- identify key contacts within the State
-- Review the current issues and challenges facing emergency
medical services from the prehospital arena into the
acute care facility -- Examine innovative ways to decrease
emergency department gridlock -- Identify system impediments
that can lead to more rapid throughput -- Review leading
articles of 2002 -- Recognize basic evidence-based medicine
concepts -- Improve appraisal skills of journal article
evaluation -- Understand a basic model of pathophysiology
for cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE) -- Identify medications
that decrease preload and afterload in CPE patients
-- Learn risks and benefits of the various inotropic
agents available -- Examine the benefits of non-invasive
positive pressure ventilation -- Become familiar with
the legal process as it relates to malpractice suits
-- Learn how to use the medical record to maximize your
position when confronted with a legal action -- Learn
the pitfalls in documentation -- Understand proper splinting
techniques and materials -- Receive hands-on practice
with preparing and applying splints -- Experience the
newer and rarely used splinting applications -- Understand
the complex needs of "special care" children
-- Recognize presentations of a child with a malfunctioning
ventricular shunt -- Be comfortable with the care and
replacement of varied gastrostomy tube devices -- Be
able to deal with respiratory emergencies associated
with children with tracheotomies -- Be able to evaluate
and care for the child with a central dwelling device
-- Learn skills and techniques of laceration repair
and alternative methods for suture repair.
Accreditation
This activity has been planned and implemented
in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies
of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education through the joint sponsorship of ACEP and
NJ-ACEP.
The American College of Emergency Physicians is accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education to provide continuing medical education for
physicians.
The American College of Emergency Physicians
designates this educational activity for a maximum of
6 Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition
Award. Each physician should claim only those hours
of credit actually spent in the educational activity.
Approved by the American College of Emergency
Physicians for 6 hours of ACEP Category I credit.

Research Poster Presentation
NJ-ACEP is pleased to announce the continuation
of the tradition of research posters. Posters can be
displayed beginning at 7 a.m. on May 20. Poster boards
will be available for approved abstracts only. All interested
physicians and residents are encouraged to submit their
abstracts, in the 2002 SAEM format, before May 10, 2003,
to Victor Almeida, DO, FACEP, Union Hospital, 1000 Galloping
Hill Road, Union, NJ 07083.
Accommodations
The Sheraton Edison at Raritan Center
is located just off Exit 10 of the NJ Turnpike. A block
of rooms is reserved for NJ-ACEP at a special rate of
$129 per night for Monday, May 19. Please call (732)
225-8300. Reservations must be made no later than May
2.

Victor M. Almeida, DO, FACEP, FACOEP,
is Director, Medical Education, Union Hospital; Osteopathic
Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency Program,
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
John A. Brennan, MD, FAAP, FACEP,
is Vice President of Emergency Services, St. Barnabas
Health Care System.
Sean P. Buckley, Esq. is a partner
at Buckley & Theroux, LLC, where he specializes
in civil litigation, medical malpractice, insurance
defense, products liability, and commercial litigation.
He is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as
a Civil Trial Attorney and a member of the New Jersey
Bar.
Russell H. Harris, MD, MMM, FACEP,
CPE, is CEO of the NE Region of Emcare, Inc. and is
responsible for over 30 Emergency Departments from Virginia
through Maine. He serves on the Emergency Medicine Faculty
of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia and is
an active lecturer in the area of EMTALA. He serves
as an Administrative Fellow assigned to the NJ Senate
Health Committee. He is a Captain in the US Naval Reserves.
Steve Katz, MD, FAEP, is Chairman,
Emergency Department, St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton,
NJ. He is an instructor in Surgery (Emergency Medicine),
Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
Barbara McDevitt, MD, is the Associate
Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Morristown
Memorial Hospital. Her experience with children with
complex medical needs was developed during her tenure
as the Director of the Cardiac-Respiratory Rehabilitation
Center at the Hospital for Sick Children in Washingtno,
D.C.
Mark A. Merlin, DO, FACEP is an
attending phyxician at St. Barnabas Medical Center,
St. Michael's Medical Center, Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Amal Mattu, MD, FACEP, is Director
of Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Co-Director
of Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Combined Residency
Program, University of Maryland School of Medicine,
Baltimore, MD.
Sol Nevins, MD, FACEP, is an Emergency
Medicine Attending Physician, Morristown Memorial Hospital.
He serves as faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency
at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He is the Medical Director,
AHS CCTU and MMH MICU. He is the Chair, NJ State MICU
Advisory Council.
Drew Nyce, MD, is Assistant Professor
in Emergency Medicine at UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical
School Cooper Hospital, Camden, NJ. He is Director of
EM Undergraduate Medical Education UMDNJ/RWJMS Cooper
Hospital and is responsible for teaching Evidence Based
Medicine curriculum.
Victor Scali, DO, FACOEP, is the
President of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency
Physicians, and Associate Director for the Emergency
Medicine Residency and Co-Director of Combined IM/EM
Residency at UMDNJ School of Ostepoathic Medicine.
Peter Viccellio, MD, FACEP, is
Vice Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, School
of Medicine, SUNY at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY.
Manish Vig, MD, FACEP, is an Attending
Physician, Virtua-Memorial Hospital of Burlington County.
He is a clinical professor at UMDNJ-Cooper University
and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.
Stuart Weiss, MD, FAAP, FACEP,
is the Director, Disaster Preparedness, St. Barnabas
